A GUIDE TO HABIT CHECK-INS

A first habit routine that leaves room to grow

Start with one or two things that already fit into your child’s day. A check-in should help your family notice an effort, rather than add pressure to every moment.

01

Describe one action

Try ‘put books back on the shelf before bed’ rather than an abstract goal such as ‘be disciplined.’ Agree together on what counts as completed.

02

Try the routine before perfecting the points

After a few days, consider whether the task fits your child’s age and schedule. Break difficult tasks into smaller steps, and give points less emphasis when a habit feels established.

03

A missed day is a conversation

A streak does not define a child. Talk about whether they forgot, felt tired or needed a different task, then decide what to do next.

04

Review the day in Habits

Set tasks for each child, check in after completion and see points appear in their piggy bank. Be specific about the effort you noticed.

A LITTLE START GOES A LONG WAY

Let’s save a little progress.

One small effort. One family promise. Something to smile about.
